Against those, the Mini is the fastest of the three cars through four of the fifteen corners — T7a/T7b, Charlotte's Web, T10 and T14a — and 3.58 of the 4.64-second gap to the Z4 lives in just three fast windows: the T4 crest (1.66 s), T7 (1.15 s) and T6 (0.78 s), every one of them the lead-in to a corner the Mini wins. What the weekend taught
The tight corners already go your way
Across the fifteen corner windows the Mini gives up 4.744 s in seven of them and takes back 2.253 s in the other eight. The eight it takes back are the committed, low-speed, high-camber ones: T7a/T7b in 5.697 s against the Z4's 6.297 and the M3's 6.056, plus Charlotte's Web, T10 and T14a ahead of both cars and T2/T3, T12 and T15 ahead of the Z4. For a 2,350-lb momentum car that is the correct distribution — everywhere the corner rewards commitment over horsepower, the Mini is in front.
The losses are in the lead-ins, not the corners
Three fast windows hold 3.584 s of the 4.640-second gap: the T4 crest (1.662 s), T7 (1.145 s) and T6 (0.777 s). That is more than the entire net corner deficit of 2.491 s. Every one of the three is the approach to a corner the Mini wins — the T4 crest feeds Charlotte's Web, and T6 and T7 feed T7a/T7b. Read as pairs, the pattern is consistent: the corner is won and the approach is lost by more than the corner is won by. T4 crest plus Charlotte's Web is 16.973 s against the Z4's 15.704.
The Carousel is the one tight corner going the other way
T13/T14 costs 0.476 s to the Z4 and 0.590 s to the M3, on a 51.8 MPH minimum against 69.6 and 68.1 — and it is the corner both reference cars take with no brake at all. Camber builds from +3.3 % at the apex to +6.3 % through the exit, a +0.28 g compression loads the car, and then the road climbs 9.1 m. It is the corner on this circuit that most rewards a light car with a stable platform. Its blind apex also sets the line two corners later, so a wide exit costs T14a and T15 — both of which the Mini currently wins.
About 2.15 s is the car, and no line change buys it back
The straights and links account for 2.147 s of the 4.640: 105.3 MPH top speed against the Z4's 116.9, and 102.3 MPH across the start/finish stripe against 116.8. That part is displacement. It is also the reason the three coaching notes are all about arrival and exit speed — in a car that cannot re-accelerate out of a mistake, the MPH carried onto a straight is the only part of the straight the driver controls.
One lap cannot say anything about consistency
Lap-to-lap spread and per-corner repeatability are usually where the available time actually is, and they need several clean laps to compute. On the reference Z4's Saturday the gap between its best lap and a best-segment stitch of its own laps was 1.46 s, all of it repeatability rather than new speed. Nothing equivalent can be said here yet, so nothing is said.
Next time at Barber Motorsports Park
- Send the rest of the weekend: one CSV per session from Race Studio 2 or 3 — all laps, not a single lap — to upload@trackdays.ai. That turns on the run table, lap-to-lap consistency, the Saturday-to-Sunday trend, heat cycles and a theoretical best-segment lap.
- Send the tire set, sizes and mount date. Heat cycles are a measurement rather than an inference, so no cycle count is estimated on this page — the counter starts from a real baseline once there is one.
- The T4 crest is worth a session on its own: the corner after it is the fastest of all three cars, the window itself is the single largest loss on the lap, and they are the same braking decision.
- Test whether the Carousel goes brake-free the way it does for the two reference cars, and whether the 51.8 MPH minimum is a line problem rather than a commitment one.
- Anything from Sunday at all. With one day there is no way to separate driver improvement from track and ambient change.
